The toquilla straw hats, which are commonly known as "Panama Hats," have an interesting history. Despite their misleading name, their origin and production have always been deeply rooted in Ecuadorian tradition. 

The name "Panama Hat" arose during the construction of the Panama Canal in the 19th century. As thousands of hats were exported from Ecuador to Panama, the association with the canal and its international attention cemented the misnomer. Although President Theodore Roosevelt's visit to the canal in 1906 may have further popularized the name, the true legacy of these hats lies in their exquisite craftsmanship and rich heritage in Ecuador.

Steaming: To maintain its shape, your hat should be steamed regularly. This will keep it hydrated and well-cared for.

Cleaning: If your hat gets stained, the best way to clean it is with a baby wipe. Anything you use on your hat should be gentle, as there might be a risk of damage. If the stain is hard to remove, we recommend steaming it again and cleaning it with a wipe.

Handling: To avoid damaging the crown, always handle your hat by the brim. Over time, picking it up by the crown can cause it to split due to the pressure exerted.

Packing: When traveling, your Maki Palmata hat should have a dedicated place in your suitcase. The best way to transport it is to place it in a special compartment with clothes inside and around it to maintain its shape.

Brushing: Use the appropriate brush to care for and maintain your hat.

Wetting: If your hat gets wet, remove excess water and let it air dry in the shade.

Reshaping: Use a steam iron or regular iron with a cotton cloth on top, making small circular movements until the hat is reshaped.

Heat: Do not place your hat near or on top of a heat source.

Storing: The best way to store your hat is upside down. This way, the weight will fall on the crown and not on the brim.

Another available option is hanging your hats in a hat wall. It’s THE new trend among hat lovers.

You can let the hat rest and it will settle on its own. If it still has imperfections, apply some heat to reshape it. For more information, please refer to our hat care guide.

You can straighten the hat by ironing, but make sure to use a cotton cloth to protect it. Check our hat care guide for more information.

For Domestic orders, shipping takes around 3-7 days to arrive.

For International orders Please allow 10-21 business days to receive your order, depending on the shipping method selected.

Please be aware that WE DO NOT ACCEPT RETURNS. We do accept exchanges within 10 days after the date of purchase, given that the hat is in its original condition, with the tags still attached.
