More than a hat brand
MAKIPALMATA represents a story of authenticity and artisanal mastery, woven with love and dedication in the heart of Ecuador, where nature comes to life, and the skilled hands of our artisans shape each of our hats.
OUR HERITAGE
Our mission is to preserve the ancestral craftsmanship of hat making and to share with the world the cultural wealth of Ecuador.
It comes from a word in Kichwa, Ecuador's second language, meaning "hand." It represents the skill and dexterity of our artisans, who create each hat with their expert hands.
It refers to the raw material we use for hats, toquilla straw, extracted from the region's palm trees.
OUR STORY
GLENDA BETANCOURT
Founder & Designer
“Honoring heritage. Designing for the future.”
Born in Ecuador and based in Miami, Glenda Betancourt is the Founder and Designer of MAKIPALMATA.
Raised in a family with a decades-long legacy in the craftsmanship and trade of toquilla straw hats, she developed a deep appreciation for Ecuador’s artisanal heritage from an early age. Inspired by generations of tradition, she founded MAKIPALMATA to preserve ancestral weaving techniques while bringing handcrafted luxury to a global audience.
Before launching the brand, Glenda worked at CNN en Español and later served within Florida’s community healthcare system while earning her Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA). Her diverse professional background shaped her vision of creating a brand that honors culture, empowers artisans, and celebrates purposeful design.
Today, Glenda works closely with Ecuadorian artisans to create timeless collections that blend heritage craftsmanship with modern elegance. Each piece is handwoven in Ecuador and thoughtfully finished in Miami, reflecting MAKIPALMATA’s commitment to sustainability, authenticity, and refined luxury.
